Commanding the Good When I Don’t Do It?

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Peace be upon you. This is not my work. But I believe that it can perhaps help clarified what you have in mind. I have always have this dilemma when I want to advice other people. Hopefully this will be beneficial to you.

Question: The issue of enjoining the good and forbidding the evil. There are certain things I do which can be deemed as Islamic and other things which can be deemed as haraam/prohibited. I am of the opinion therefore, that I can only really advice people on issues which I know I am doing good in, therefore I only advice people in certain things in terms of prayer, and establishing prayer or not drinking or zina. But there are other things which I almost feel hypocritcal in talking about and when I try and give advice they look at me like I am in no position to do so. But that being said, if I have not yet perfected certain social issues like talking to women, listening to music (or at least so called haram music) am I even in the position to do so? Many people would look at me and quite simply say 'who is he to give me advice'?

Answer:

The same question was asked by a Sahabat/companion to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who replied that he should continue commanding the good and forbidding the evil even though he doesn't practise it himself.

There are 2 issues here:

i. the responsibility of doing the good / refraining from the evil
ii. the responsibility of commanding the good and forbidding the evil

Neglecting the first does not excuse one from the second. Rather it is hoped that fulfilling the second responsibility will cause the person to fulfill the first.

The Final Version

In the name of Allah. Peace be upon you brothers and sisters.

In this current world, we are bombarded with great amount of technology. One of them is diverse software such as Google Chrome and Windows 7. Most of the time, you will need to download to keep it up-to-date. I have to update Microsoft Security Essential yesterday and it took quite some time to download because I didn’t update it for quite a while. Some of the software has final version, which claimed to have no need any more update.

If I ask you, would you like to have updated version or a beta-version of anti-virus software? Definitely the updated version. If there is a text book that was published with updated content each year, we would also want the last publication. So if there is Old Testament and New Testament, why not we get the latest and Final Testament, The Glourious Quran?

Just like the early, not-updated version of Windows is susceptible to bugs and viruses, it will be just as logical to say that the Final Testament will be more immune and protected. Almight God said: ”We have, without doubt sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption)" (Qur'an 15:9) There is neither addition nor subtraction from the Quran. It is still the same as it was revealed over 1400 years ago. Two of the original manuscripts of the Qur'an prepared 1400 years ago still exist today. O¬ne is in the Topkapi Sarav Museum in Istanbul, Turkey, and the other in Tashkent, Russia. Both of these are identical in content with the Qur'an available all over the world today. Try looks at them yourself when you get into a book store next time.

Perhaps one will argues, “How can a book 1400 years ago is more updated that the current world with advanced information and technology?” I agree. Why then, this Book of Signs contains various scientific facts that can only be proven now? One fact about the universe revealed in the verses of the Qur'an is that the sky is made up of seven layers. Almighty God said: "It is He Who created everything on the earth for you and then directed His attention up to heaven and arranged it into seven regular heavens. He has knowledge of all things. (The Qur'an, 2:29)

If we count the number of layers known today, we see that the atmosphere consists of exactly seven layers, just as stated in the verse. 1. Troposphere 2. Stratosphere 3. Ozonosphere 4. Mesosphere 5. Thermosphere 6. Ionosphere 7. Exosphere. It is just one of many facts you can get from it. As Dr Maurice Bucaille, a French Medical Doctor argued in one of his book “The Bible, The Qur'an and Science”, that the Qur'an contains no statements contradicting established scientific fact.

God says: "Will they not then consider the Qur'an with care? If it had been from other than Allah they would have found therein much discrepancy." (Qur'an 4:82)

Therefore I reminding myself and you all, brothers and sisters of Islam, to read and appreciate this miracle that you can hold, read, understand, and physically give to others. For the others, I ask you, why not read the Quran? Wallahu a’lam.
